Have you ever wanted to visit Iceland, which has recently become a popular tourist destination, and witness its stunning natural Nordic environment, but just never had the opportunity to pack your bags and board a plane? Or personally eyewitness a natural phenomenon such as a volcanic eruption, but shied away from it, thinking that such an adventure was just way too dangerous?
On April 27, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern Time, you can do the above from the comfort of your own home and through the magic of live streaming. Visit Iceland will present a 14-hour as-it-happens live streaming event on YouTube of an actual volcanic eruption that is currently taking place in Geldingadalur, a small valley that’s located in the Reykjanes Geopark in Iceland.
This 14-hour continuous live streaming ecological event is being helmed by veteran drone pilot Bjorn Steinbekk, who will act as the lead pilot as he flies up to six DJI FPV drones to offer viewers an exclusive bird’s eye view of the eruption, which started with just one crater on March 19, and has now evolved into several new craters as the volcano’s lava constantly flows through the immediate area. Mr. Steinbekk will also offer continuous narration of the proceedings. As well, there will be interviews with a number of local scientists and inhabitants, who will give the viewers a great deal of scientific background knowledge and stories that relate to the volcano and the eruption.
The Geldingadalur valley is known in Iceland as a historic active volcano system. The past volcanic activity there has been known to create several unique opportunities for practical geothermal applications, such as Iceland’s famous Blue Lagoon, as well as Svarsgengi geothermal power plant that supplies the area with green geothermal energy.
