Montreal sports scene – With the way things are going these days within the Montreal professional sports scene, you might say that hope ‘falls’ eternal.
Let me explain.
As the waning months of 2019 are upon us, this fall is certainly an interesting time to be a Montreal sports fan.
The Alouettes are having their best regular season in almost a decade. Helmed by dynamic quarterback Vernon Adams, Jr., the Als have played one exciting game after another this season, and earned themselves an early entry into the CFL playoffs. If they keep playing the same kind of football that has been entertaining fans this year, then the Alouettes could be making their way to Calgary later next month to compete for their eighth Grey Cup championship in franchise history.
In the baseball world, the 2019 World Series is currently underway between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals (and as of this writing, the Nats are leading the series 1-0). Many Expos fans are following this World Series avidly, believing that if the Nationals beat the Astros in the Series, they sort-of have a right to share this championship, believing that it’s also the Expos’ championship in spirit. Although this year marks the first time a Washington-based team has participated in a World Series since 1933 (and haven’t won a World Series since 1924), Montreal fans should just let the Nationals earn and savour their victory as the Washington Nationals, not as Expos redux.
Don’t forget, there is still a concerted effort by a group of prominent Montrealers such as Stephen Bronfman, Mitch Garber and Perry Gee to bring Major League Baseball back to our fair city. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is in favour of this proposition (on condition that we build a new stadium for the team), and Mayor Valerie Plante seems to be warming to this plan, so there is hope (and let’s see what the upcoming fortunes of the Tampa Bay Rays turn out to be).
And then there’s hockey. Our revered Montreal Canadiens are having a decent 2019-2020 season so far thanks to the efforts of stalwart veterans like Carey Price, Shea Weber, Jonathan Drouin and Maxi Domi, combined with younger players like Keith Kinkaid, Nick Suzuki and Cale Fleury. Hopefully, by next April, if things go the Habs’ way, they could be on the trail of that elusive 25thStanley Cup, check out the latest odds at Betway Sports. I am aware that the days of a dynasty where the Habs would win consecutive Cups and Mayor Drapeau would proclaim that the Stanley Cup parade will follow the usual route are gone, but all the fans are asking for is the team to win that milestone Cup number 25. It would certainly make this city feel like it’s the City of Champions once more.
…So let hope fall eternal for our sports teams. And hopefully, I will be at the 25th Stanley Cup parade next spring, which will follow the usual route.
