The virtual reality world has been increasingly used for a whole range of purposes over the last few years. Whether that’s virtual home tours, demonstrating products, a form of education, or its use in the entertainment industry, VR is rapidly becoming a staple in many people’s day-to-day lives.
What exactly is virtual reality?
Virtual reality (VR) is an attempt to reproduce an experience for an individual. This often involves the individual wearing a headset over their eyes and ears, which generates a visual and auditory experience to simulate a virtual world. When the individual moves their head, the things they see will change and move too, as if they were there in the world they are seeing through a screen. This means the VR experience creates a 360-degree world and a beyond 3D experience; this completely immerses the individual in a new world. The best thing is that it is accessible and affordable to most people because you can try it from home.
Uses of VR in the entertainment industry
The use of virtual reality has a home in many different areas of the entertainment industry and is an innovative and trendy way of transforming and reimagining how we can liven up older forms of entertainment.
Gaming
One of the leading uses of VR is in video games. Gaming has always tried to transfer people to other worlds and allow players to see and do things they can’t usually do. VR takes the idea of this and takes it further than gamers could ever have imagined. Controlling a character whilst experiencing first-hand what they would be can completely immerse a gamer in the world. A headset combined with censored gloves means the player can also influence the world they’re in, generating realistic sensations and movements. In some places, treadmills can even be used so players can move around in the virtual world without moving blindly around in the real world.
Films
You can watch films through a VR headset so that you have no other visual distractions when watching a movie. There are even some apps that allow you to sit in a virtual theatre and connect with your friends, so you can look around at them and talk about the movie as it plays. Some movies have even been specially made for a person to be a part of the action (i.e. inside the film) which gives them the ability to look around in all directions within the scene and provides a similar experience as detailed in the gaming section.
Events
Since the covid pandemic, more events had to take place virtually rather than in person. Using virtual reality headsets to attend these events can be more engaging and can enhance the experience. You can be more involved rather than feeling that you’re missing out by not being there in real life.
Virtual Tours
Some places, such as the British Museum, have started offering virtual tours as an alternative to visiting the museum in real life. The British Museum is actually the largest indoor space on Google Maps, and you can use VR to look around the space at the exhibits as if you were there yourself.
Why Use VR
As outlined in the uses of VR for entertainment purposes, there are many different benefits of trying virtual reality.
Quality Is Improving
Virtual reality has been around for a while now but its use has only recently started to become consistent and affordable. Developers have been working to improve the quality of the imagery and technology, meaning VR is steadily becoming more and more realistic. It’s definitely at the stage where you can become completely immersed in the virtual world, which provides an unparalleled realistic experience.
It’s Engaging
With constant distractions in our world (friends, chores, your phone), being able to immerse yourself in a completely different world requiring all of your focus, is a rare thing. VR is as engaging as you can get, and you can get lost in learning, gaming, and connecting with people from all over the world.
Endless Possibilities
There are so many options out there and the potential for virtual reality can only grow. With funding increasing, and because of the very nature of VR where you can do anything, there are a lot of exciting things that can and will be created in the future.
Virtual reality is an immersive and magical experience that has a place in many different areas of the entertainment industry, such as gaming, films, and events. It has come a long way and is only going to continue to grow.
