The transition from warm weather to cooler nights is an ideal time to check a home’s exterior for conditions that could lead to pest activity. Mice and insects commonly take advantage of gaps that homeowners may not notice during the summer.
Begin with doors and windows. Replace damaged weather stripping and repair screens. Then inspect areas around utility lines, pipes, vents, siding and the foundation. Garages deserve particular attention because exterior doors and garage-door seals can deteriorate over time.
Good housekeeping also plays an important preventive role. Food should be stored in closed containers, crumbs and spills should be cleaned promptly, and garbage should remain covered. Outdoors, avoid allowing clutter, debris or stored materials to build up directly against the house.
Moisture problems should not be ignored. Leaking fixtures, damp storage areas and drainage problems can make a property more attractive to a range of pests. Correcting these conditions helps make the home less hospitable.
