Top 5 main components of effective literacy instructions for students

literacy instructions

Each of us is willing to provide equal to each student as a teacher! We want them to read accurately, rapidly, and with comprehension!

The importance of literacy is very obvious for students across all school subjects. If any of them struggle to read a novel, a textbook, or simple classroom assignments, or college essay writing it can lead them to a huge disadvantage.

If you are teaching students with such difficulties, there are main components of effective teaching literacy instructions for students.

The NICHD (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 2000) has summarized these five components to be effective reading instructions after several decades of scientific research!

Here are the five critical areas:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension

These five components are incorporated as effective reading instruction.

Each component depends on how much guidance or direction the teachers are willing to provide to their students or how many skills students acquire.

These components are somewhat similar to how one can buy an essay online! There are elements to know, like academic integrity, legality, quality and originality, customization and plagiarism, privacy, and security. In a similar way to make your student capable of effective literacy, these components must be considered!

Further, in this article, we will be discussing in brief about each of these components:

1.   Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is one of the key components of student literacy. It is defined as the ability to understand that the spoken language is made of many smaller units, usually referred to as phonemes.

Phonemic awareness is being able to identify each phoneme in spoken words to make reading and writing better.

This component focuses on helping students focus on students sensitivity to these sounds! From this, they will be able to understand how each of the alphabet is pronounced.

Phonemic awareness can be divided into various skills like isolation, identification, categorization, blending, manipulation, and such.

Upon providing this awareness, students can understand that spoken words are formed from various small units of sound.

Research has provided that phonemic awareness helps in improving the reading skill of students.

So, it’s important to provide students with the concept of phonemes and how they can particularly learn to blend the sounds and read each word proficiently.

2.   Phonics

The spoken language has existed for a very long time, even before the need for written communication or written language.

When people started inventing letters of the alphabet to represent these sounds of their spoken language, they set rules to make spelling consistent and similar from word to word.

Phonics is defined as a set of rules that shows the relationship between the letters in the spelling of the words and sounds of spoken language.

They are a key component of effective literacy practice instruction as they focus on the relationship between letters and sounds (phonemes).

Phonics helps young readers understand and use the alphabetic principle, allowing them to use this relationship when they read or spell words.

When taught about Phocis, students can learn to decode even unfamiliar words by sounding each out.

They usually begin with the basics of short or long vowels, and as students’ progress, they learn about blends, digraphs, and diphthongs.

3.   Fluency

Fluency can be understood to be understanding word recognition in the reader’s mind being able to read paragraphs of messages or text. It can also refer to the ability of students to group the set of words within a sentence into phrases making it easier to comprehend.

Fluency is reading with accuracy, speed, and expression.

Fluent reading means that the student can comprehend text more easily, sounding engaging and creating a meaningful reading experience.

Fluency comprehends the ability of the student to recognize the words printed and construct the meaning from the recognized words, usually known as comprehension.

The whole idea of fluency in literacy in the classroom focuses on easily identifying words on the first attempt. Whenever a word is identified incorrectly, it breaks the fluency.

While practice is a key component of being fluent, teachers can begin by helping students with basic strategies like reading with expression using fingers to keep track of words as they read. This helps students become more proficient readers.

Fluency helps students focus their attention on understanding the term well.

Reading out loud can also help students develop fluency as they practice what they read.

4.   Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the words that a student knows to communicate.

There are four different types of vocabulary:

  • Listening: refers to the word we understand when we communicate with others
  • Speaking: refers to the words we use when talking to someone
  • Reading: refers to the word we know when we read or see them in the print
  • Writing: refers to the word we can use when we write.

Vocabulary is an important component of literacy proficiency.

Students’ vocabulary knowledge has a direct impact on how they read. Students with large vocabulary can understand and process what they read more efficiently than those with limited vocabulary.

It has always been a barrier to student success in reading and academics. To close these vocabulary gaps, students require direct and explicit instructions regarding developing their vocabulary, i.e., learning new words and understanding their meaning in depth.

This can be gained by studying morphology, practicing the use of new words, playing word games, using a dictionary, and such.

Listening can also be a great way to develop vocabulary knowledge.

Teachers can practice using picture books or discussing new words during class to expose students to new words. It can also be done by introducing them to synonyms and antonyms of a known vocabulary.

5.   Comprehension

It wouldn’t be a lie to say that comprehension is the ultimate goal of practices in literacy instruction.

Comprehension refers to the process of constructing a meaning that is reasonable and accurate. It can be done by connecting what has been read to what the reader already has an idea of!

While fluent decoding is an essential component, being a good comprehended helps in literacy fluency.

Reading comprehension refers to the ability of students to understand and make meaning out of what they are reading.

Good comprehends are active readers who imply strategies to interact with the text they are reading!

Students with strong decoding skills can comprehend and develop skills out of it.

There are a number of comprehension strategies to help students improve. It involves predictions, visualizing, questioning, understanding the importance, and such.
