Montreal Public Golf courses – Like most outdoor sports in Canada, golfing’s heyday comes each spring and summer. Unfortunately for those with a penchant for putting greens and 72-par courses, finding a public course can be just as difficult as waiting for a day of sunshine. Whilst they wait for this day, many golf fans stick to watching the pros.
The arrival of spring also means it’s Majors season in the PGA Tour. One of the biggest events of the year will be the 2021 PGA Championship, where fans and pundits will be looking to see who will take down champion Collin Morikawa. Currently, sites that offer golf picks for upcoming tournaments are shifting their focus from the Masters to the PGA Championship to predict which pro will pull ahead this year.
Last year, all eyes were on DeChambeau when Morikawa took the lead. Heading into the tournament, many wondered how DeChambeau’s experiments in developing his drive would translate. Though he didn’t win the PGA Championship, he’s had many golf enthusiasts interested in developing tricks of their own.
For those in Montreal, the spring season is the perfect time to hit a public course and develop their driving and putting skills. That sunny day is likelier to happen and the weather will hopefully stay fine. But which nearby course is best? Let’s take a closer look.
Check out these top Five Montreal Public Golf courses:
Club de Golf Métropolitain Anjou
This golf course, located in Anjou, provides the best of both private and public worlds for the average golfer. The grounds themselves feature multiple courses, as well as a driving range and a 6-hole, par 3 course that’s perfect for casual players.
Even better, there’s a ‘ready golf’ feature, which is specially designed for those looking to have fun rather than develop their technique. However, Club de Golf Métropolitain Anjou is also a professional course; their 18-hole Championship course is the longest in all of Quebec.
Club de Golf Express La Prairie
Those looking to get back to nature (with their clubs in hand) can take advantage of this location. Only ten minutes from Champlain Bridge, the Club de Golf Express La Prairie delivers on beautiful landscapes and a dynamic learning environment.
As a public course, there are practice fields and short game stations that can help golfers of all levels refine their skills. They also have an 11-hole course. Like Golf Municipal (below), this location is ideal for those looking to take lessons.
Club de Golf Express La Prairie offers private lessons for people of all ages. Even better, they have lighting for those looking to enjoy a nighttime practice session.
Golf Dorval
Located just outside of Montreal in Dorval, this location is able to offer spacious courses at an affordable price. Golf Dorval also has a private club, a restaurant, a shop, and a driving range which help create a one-stop-shop golfing experience.
The courses were designed in the 1980s by Mr. Graham Cooke, so there’s a professional feel to each green. But keep in mind that the courses sit next to the airport, so golfers will need to mind the noise.
Golf Municipal de Montréal
One of the most exciting golfing opportunities in Quebec is nestled inside city lines. The Golf Municipal de Montréal is located right next to Parc Maisonneuve. The 9-hole course, which was built in 1977, showcases downtown Montreal while also providing golf rentals for hobby players.
This course is ideal for those new to the sport who aren’t quite ready to dive into equipment purchases themselves—or even buck up for a big day at a private course. With a restaurant located on-site, the municipal course is perfect for a day trip that doesn’t leave the city limits.
Meadowbrook
Much like the Club de Golf Métropolitain Anjou, Meadowbrook (located west of Ville Sant-Pierre) has the feel and competitiveness of a private course with the prices and accessibility of a public course. In addition to its 18-hole course, Meadowbrook also has its own private Range Golf Academy.
Opened in 1959 under the name Wentworth Golf Course, Meadowbrook has since become a popular 18-hole course. It’s known for its greens, all of which are indigenous to the local area and help create a peaceful ambiance.
