Montreal says NO to hosting FIFA World Cup 2026

Montreal has officially picked up its hat from the ring and will not be bidding for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The city announced its decision in a brief statement this morning stating mainly the reason for with drawing was the provincial government had withdrawn its support in hosting the World Cup.

Where will the FIFA World Cup 2026 played?

The Quebec government said it wouldn’t fund the event due to citing cost overruns and the government could not justify the cost to taxpayers. Meanwhile Toronto and Edmonton are still in the running to be host cities for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The governing body for the sport, Canada Soccer released a statement thanking Montreal for its bid. It also said the organization looks forward in working with the Canadian government, provincial governments in support of Toronto and Edmonton as host cities.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held in June and July 2026 in Canada, United States and Mexico.
