Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is on course for a record-breaking opening season in the Premier League. The Premier League continues to attract a lot of interest in Canada, as many soccer fans in the country tune in to see players like Haaland produce their magic in the league.
Haaland is being tipped to become the all-time leading goalscorer in Premier League history, should he remain in England. Here is a look at some of the best strikers in Premier League history that he is chasing down.
Hall of Famer Thierry Henry
Considered one of the greatest players to ever feature in the Premier League, Thierry Henry was a star between 1999 and 2012. He was signed by Arsene Wenger from Juventus, and he made a name for himself in the sport at Arsenal, scoring 175 goals, including the Golden Boot on four occasions.
It was not just the number of goals that made Henry so great, he provided football fans great entertainment for the Gunners and Barcelona at the latter stages of his career. He won the Champions League with the latter in 2009.
Henry was part of the Arsenal team which became Invincibles in the 2003/04 season. He is considered not just one of the Gunners’ best players, but also one of the finest forwards to play in Europe over the last three decades.
Harry Kane Into the Double Century Club and His Tally Is Still Growing
Tottenham striker Harry Kane made the news recently when he scored his 200th Premier League goal in a 1-0 victory over Manchester City. The England captain has consistently delivered an excellent goals tally since breaking into the North London team.
Kane will be hoping to score the goals to help his side qualify for the Champions League again in the 2022/23 campaign. As of February 22nd, Tottenham is +200 with bookmaker Betway for a top-four finish. They have missed out on the premier European competition in each of the last two seasons.
If Kane remains in England, he could become the all-time top Premier League scorer. At the age of 29, he has many years ahead of him at the highest level.
Sergio Aguero Made Scoring Goals Look Easy
Argentine Sergio Aguero left Manchester City in 2021 having scored 184 goals in the Premier League. As per the BBC match report, his most famous came against QPR deep into stoppage time in the final game of the season, which ensured his side won the title for the first time. His consistency during his 10 seasons in England was very impressive.
Aguero has established himself as one of the best finishers in Premier League history. During his decade at Manchester City, he broke their all-time goalscoring record. He also scored more hat-tricks in the Premier League than any other player, netting a total of 12.
The now-retired striker helped City to five Premier League titles, six EFL Cups, and an FA Cup. He won the Copa America trophy with his country in 2021, while in the early stages of his career, he lifted the Europa League with Atletico Madrid.
Wayne Rooney Finishes Career a Legend for Manchester United and England
The former Manchester United forward ended his career as the second-highest goalscorer in Premier League history. He scored 208 goals in the competition, and when he left Old Trafford in 2017, he did so as the club’s all-time scorer.
With five Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League success, he played his role in a great period for Manchester United, which is one of the most successful clubs in England. As well as being a great goalscorer in domestic football, Rooney also delivered for his country. He finished his international career with 53 goals for the Three Lions.
Shearer Remains the Man to Catch
With 260 Premier League goals, Alan Shearer remains the player that Haaland, Kane, and others are all still chasing. The England player was the Golden Boot winner three times, he landed the PFA Player of the Year trophy twice, and he scored one of the fastest Premier League goals on record.
Shearer won the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994 and he later moved to his hometown club Newcastle where he became their all-time leading goalscorer.
Haaland has the potential to break lots of records in the Premier League. If he continues to score goals at the rate he is going, it won’t be long before he is alongside some of the above players in the all-time standings.
