Montreal residents gather to denounce deportations

Amidst rising deportations in the neighbourhood, Parc-Extension residents will be gathering Sunday, September 27, 2026 at 11am at 7000 avenue du Parc (near Metro Parc) for a public assembly to defend their neighbors and to counter exclusionary immigration measures. The event is also taking place in the final weeks of the Quebec election, which has seen efforts by multiple political parties to blame migrants for the housing crisis and the struggles of the healthcare and education system.

With the implementation of Bill C-12 and an increase in immigration enforcement, Canada plans to deport an estimated 30 000 migrants this year- with 3 000 deported in Quebec during the first quarter of 2026. Given that Quebec has accounted for half of all deportations to date, and that migrants from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh represent some of the communities with the largest number of deportations in progress, Parc-Extension has been particularly targeted by the recent wave of deportations. Many Parc-Extension residents are facing family separation, losing access to income and to services, and are living with daily stress, isolation, and fear. The neighborhood has also witnessed an uptick in harassment from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), with plain-clothes agents intimidating neighbors and carrying out unsolicited visits to places of worship.

Residents are holding the assembly as a first step in a larger neighborhood campaign to stop deportations and build a solidarity zone in Parc-Extension. They will also be reiterating the need for a full and inclusive regularization program for all non-status migrants.

The event will feature testimonials from community members facing deportation, as well as from local community groups and healthcare providers. Interviews will be possible on site.
