Quebec vaccine passport

The Quebec vaccine passport, called “VaxiCode”, is now available to be downloaded for those who have Apple devices, and soon after for those who have Android devices. The passport will go into effect starting September 1.

Basically, the passport is an electronic record of an individual’s vaccinations, which is presented in the form of a quick response – or QR – code.

According to CBC News, the passport system will apply to anyone 13 years of age and older, and will be operated through the VaxiCode app. Once uploaded, it will display the  QR code that can be widely scanned; the code will contain an individual’s name, date of birth and vaccination status. The code can be sent by email from the provincial government, or by downloading it from the web page https://covid19.quebec.ca.

CBC News also reported that the vaccine passport will be required for those who take part in many activities and events that could be deemed as places that contain a high risk of transmission of the corona virus. That includes festivals, gyms, sports venues and training facilities, as well as restaurants, bars and terrasses (but not for takeout orders), casinos, bingo halls, bowling alleys, amusement parks, fairs, marathons, escape rooms and zoos. However, the passport won’t be required at grocery stores, pharmacies, private gatherings, weddings, funerals, places of worships, spas, driving lessons and accommodation lodgings (i.e., hotels, motels, etc.).

As for schools, the passport won’t be necessary in order to gain access to their respective facilities; however, it will be required for older students who are vaccinated and wish to participate in certain extracurricular activities that may be regarded as high risks for transmission of the virus.

During the first two weeks when the passport will be in effect, the provincial government will be mostly lenient with the enforcement of the passport system. Individuals are only allowed to use their own QR codes, and altering a government document or using false identification are illegal and are subject to punishment under the Criminal Code. And as of September 15, anyone who is caught committing an act of fraud that’s associated with the vaccine passport can be subject to fines ranging between $1,000 and $6,000.
