Après le déluge: A Black-and-White Dance Adventure for Curious Kids Lands at La Chapelle in November

Après le déluge: A Black-and-White Dance Adventure for Curious Kids Lands at La Chapelle in November

What would emerge after a flood, a catastrophe, or a complete upending of the world as we know it? Poetry? Magic? Tentacles? That’s the question at the heart of Après le déluge, a quirky, funny, and visually wild dance-and-puppetry show for young audiences coming to La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines in Montreal on November 5, 6, and 7, 2026.

Created and performed by choreographers Julia B. Laperrière and Sébastien Provencher, the show is co-presented by La Chapelle and La Mèche Courte.

What Is the Show About?

Picture a bizarre, very angular world, all in black and white. Two humanoid creatures make a dramatic entrance and promptly disrupt the established order. Cautiously and clumsily, they try to make sense of the laws of this kaleidoscopic environment, filled with strange sounds and mysterious boxes. The possible appearance of tentacles is cause for concern! Or is it?

What follows is a choreography full of mishaps, irony, and surprises, pulsing to the rhythm of live music. Unusual puppets with organic shapes also find their way onto the checkerboard-patterned set.

It’s a journey into a quirky universe, but organizers say it also invites a bit of reflection, on our own urge to box everything away, and on the transformative power of good old chaos. As the presenters put it: “Seriously, what would we be without it?”

The Puppets and Sculptures

The show’s wild puppets and moving sculptures were created by Wendt+Dufaux, a creative duo made up of Sarah Wendt, originally from Prince Edward Island, and Pascal Dufaux of France. They also collaborated with Laperrière and Provencher on the creation of the piece.

Meet the Creators

Julia B. Laperrière is a Quebec-born choreographer and performer based in Berlin. She holds a bachelor’s degree in dance from UQAM and a master’s degree in choreography from the CCN in Montpellier. Her practice divides time between Berlin, Montpellier, and Montreal, and the interplay of languages, places, practices, and genres is part of her work. She has been making work for young audiences since 2016, including an ongoing collaboration with Alfredo Zinola and Micaela Kuhn. Their approach is experimental and treats the audience as experts, rather than infantilizing or overprotecting young people.

Sébastien Provencher is a Montreal-based dance artist and a graduate of UQAM. For several years, he has developed a choreographic practice built around interdisciplinary performance forms and an increasingly performative approach to movement, with an emphasis on a close connection with the audience. He started dancing relatively late in life, but quickly distinguished himself as a choreographer and performer. In 2015, he won the Audience Award at the Quartiers Danses Festival for Children of Chemistry, his second full-length work, which explores hypermasculinity through the codes of fashion and sport. Après le déluge is his first work for young audiences, created with his longtime collaborator Laperrière, and one of more than a dozen creations to his credit.
