Pairing wines with your BBQ

Pairing wines with your BBQ – As the temperature rises slowly and we enter into the spring season, many people start thinking about lighting up the BBQ. The conviviality of cooking outdoors is something very attractive to many amateur foodies. If is not very chilly or windy outside, you pop up a bottle of sparkling or rose wine while you prep up your meat and veggies and wait until they grill to perfection!!. It is a great way to encourage conversation and storytelling.

Another advantage of BBQ is that you dirty the kitchen less. Basically you would need two bowls and two boards to prepare your marinated meat and seasoned vegetables that are going to the open fire. It is also a relatively fast cooking method that frees up time to spend with your loved ones or entertaining your guests.

With a BBQ you don’t need a complicated wine. It’s nice to have some complexity in your glass but your main focus should be the people around it and of course what are you grilling. Of course, what you would drink and grill will depend on the size of your wallet. I suspiciously think that big spenders would opt for fancy cuts of steak and expensive wines. Others I suppose will do with chicken or the democratic pork cuts. However, no matter what you are grilling, here are some versatile wine suggestions to satisfy all the demanding palates

Jaffelin Rully 2016 –  SAQ # 13907111 $32.75

The most northerly village of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy, Rully is a not very well known appellation that makes quality driven red and white wines. It has a surface production surface area of approximately 343.46 ha with a focus for white wine production.

Chardonnay is considered to be the better grape in Rully; showing notes of yellow fruit, these light, unoaked styles tend to be austere in problematic cool vintages but sometimes have outstanding fruit character. The reds show light simple fruit and a slightly rustic earthiness, in the style of the Côte Chalonnaise, and can age fairly well.

The Côtes Chalonnaise yields some of Burgundy’s best-value whites, and Jaffelin Rully is an excellent example of the quality in this village. This is absolutely delicious, classic white Burgundy. Floral and buttery with fine aromas of almond cream, ripe peach and pear. Steely structure with a good acidity. It drinks well know but it will age in the next 5 years. Pair it with grilled scallops.
