STM not accepting cash in fight against COVID-19

Although it is still unclear how long the COVID-19 virus can survive on paper money and coins, the Société de transport de Montréal is taking no chances. The STM announced on March 24th, that they will no longer be accepting any cash payments at their self-service machines and ticket counters. ‘Cash is no longer accepted in our network. This includes our automatic vending machines. Public transportation is not free, however. You must hold a valid ticket. For our points of sale’ they write on their Twitter feed. Transit users are being asked to purchase their fares using their debit or credit cards. The STM continues to take measures in order to keep public transit users and their employees safe and will continue to post updates.
