The Mega Blok 80,000 square foot factory in Saint-Laurent, Montreal will be closing down operations over the next year. 583 people will be out of work starting September 2020.
The manufacturing of the plastic bricks and blocks will be outsourced to factories in Mexico and China.
Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet said it was told of the plants demise late Friday afternoon and his department have started to plan for how to help the 583 Quebecers losing their jobs.
Mega Blok company started in 1967 by Montreal Bertrand family. In 2014 Mega Blok was purchased by Mattel for $517 million.
Head office will continue to operate in Montreal.
