Montreal Irish community outraged over name suggestion for Griffintown REM Station

Montreal Irish community outraged

Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante has suggested that she would like to name the new REM station in Griffintown at the Peel Basin after former Quebec Premier Bernard Landry, called Griffintown – Bernard Landry Station and has the Montreal Irish community outraged.

Director of the Montreal Irish Monument Park Foundation Fergus Keys started a public awareness campaign on naming the station, Irish Station – Station des Irlandais. Keys has meet with the REM planners and said they were very much open to the idea.

Griffintown has had strong ties to the Irish working community in Montreal for over the last 150 years. “Griffintown is being redeveloped all the time and its Irish roots are being lost,” Keys said.
