Air Transat flight 942 leaving Montreal was on its way to Fort Lauderdale was diverted to Newark after reports of smoke in the cargo hold.
Flight T942 left Montreal at 7:10 a.m. this morning and landed safely in Newark, N.J., around 8:30 a.m. All flights in and out of the airport were suspended for 35 minutes.
The 189 passengers made an emergency evacuation from the Boeing 737 plane soon after, said Air Transat spokesperson Debbie Cabana. All 189 Passengers and crew excited the Air Transat plane using emergency slides. Apparently 2 passengers where hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
Air Transat is sending a new plane to Newark Airport to pick up passengers and finish their route to Fort Lauderdale.
Newark Airport flights were delayed around 15 minutes until Newark service resumed normal function.
no fire was found and the cause of the smoke remains under investigation.
