Comedian Ronny Chieng was armed with two degrees – a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) and a Bachelor of Las – from the University of Melbourne, Australia when he deiced to pursue a career in stand-up comedy.
I was straight out of college and I couldn’t get a job, so I had to find some more work to ease the economic pressure off myself,’ he said during a recent phone interview.
Comedian Ronny Chieng impressive career
Since 2012, Chieng has built quite an impressive career in comedy, distinguishing himself with appearances in both the Sydney and Melbourne comedy festivals, being named by Variety in 2016as one of the 10 Comics to Watch, his own Comedy Central series called Ronny Chieng: International Student, his regular appearances on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and of course, his role in the box office smash movie Crazy Rich Asians. This year, Ronny marks his return to Just For Laughs with a solo show called Ronny Chieng: the Tone Issues Tour, which will have a three-performance run at the Gesu from July 23 to 25.
I got the title from my wife, who told me I had tone (of voice) issues, in which she thought I was always angry and sarcastic, but I’m not; it’s just a miscommunication, he said.
I’m just trying to make some money – Chieng admits
Chieng admits that his aim in being a comic is quite a simple one. I’m just trying to make some money by telling big jokes and hopefully get people to laugh at them, he said. Great comedy is really like a good argument, in which great bits have a warped sense of logic to them. When people sometimes disagree with what I say, they see the power comedy can have.
As Chieng wraps up his tour, he says he will continue to do his appearances on The Daily Show amongst his other upcoming projects. He also enjoys the opportunity of visiting Montreal, which he says is one of his favourite cities next to his hometown of Melbourne. Canadians are chill people, and Montreal has quite a European vibe to it. I also love eating poutine, he admits.
