Montreal Fringe Festival – The 29th edition of the St. Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival ended with the flair of a typical show business awards show that you would normally see during the height of awards season throughout the winter and spring.

The festival honoured the shows and theatre companies that created the greatest Fringe buzz throughout the three-week festival at its annual closing Frankies Awards show, which took place on June 16 at Cafe Campus on Prince Arthur.

Hosted by the festival’s dynamic duo of Fringe Fest Executive and Artistic Director Amy Blackmore and festival stalwart Kenny Streule, the Frankies, named after the late Frank Hopkins, a longtime benefactor of the festival, gave out a total of 16 awards throughout the fun-filled evening.

The Just For Laughs Best English Comedy award went to Fool Muun Komming!; the Centaur Theatre Best English Production award was given to Multiple Organism; the MainLine Theatre Best French Production award was won by La dyslexie c’est dure a ecrire pour une dyslexique; the Most Promising Local English Company award went to Hopegrown Productions for their show The One; and the MainLine Theatre Most Promising Local French Company award went to Uptoewn Crew for their powerful drama-comedy about a toxic mother-daughter relationship called Le Venin de Jocaste.

Other Frankie Award winners include Magnificence (Best English Text); Touche pas a mes cheveaux (Best French French Text); Make It A Musical (The L’Apres Fringe 13th Hour Award); and Kathleen Aubert from Theatre Sans Fond (Spirit of the Fringe Award, which includes a guaranteed spot at next year’s 30th anniversary edition of the Fringe Festival).
