Matt and his enigmatic brother Jeff are giving back to the next generation of AEW performers. In an interview with American sports magazine Sports Illustrated, Matt dived into his work against Colten and Austin Gunn—sons of WWE Hall of Famer Billy Gunn.
“I recall the Gunns as children when they were the same age as my kids. Fast forward, we are wrestling them. How wild is that?” Matt explained further how his desire to help the upcoming stars in AEW motivates him to continue working.
“I enjoy and love giving back. When we (Jeff and I) were younger, I remember it was quite an issue with the older guard. Jeff and I promised we’d never be those types of people. It is part of the responsibility to give these lads a nudge. Father Time waits for no man, they say. Things change as you age, but you must make the most of it.”
“If people don’t give back, the business fades away. Someone molded the older talent, now is the time to create someone new. I can confidently say the business has become more selfless over the past 30 years.”
Mentoring private party and passing the torch to the Bucks
Matt Hardy has been a great mentor of the Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen combo—popularly known as Private Party—for the past 18 months. He has featured in various multi-man matches alongside Private Party, aiding their gradual evolution in AEW.
As previously mentioned, the Hardy Boyz is a formidable tandem only rivaled by a shortlist of competitors. One is the Young Bucks; a pair of fellow brothers comprising Matt and Nick Jackson.
The Hardys and Jacksons worked together in Ring of Honour (ROH) in 2017. However, they now find themselves under Tony Khan, and Matt believes handing over the torch to the Young Bucks six years ago paved the way for AEW’s inception in 2019.
“We have loved the Bucks for over a decade now,” Hardy said. “The night before we returned to WWE at WrestleMania 33, we were against the Bucks in a ladder match at Supercard of Honor. I remember telling Matt and Nick we were going to WrestleMania tomorrow. I still vividly hear myself saying, ‘Inform everyone you defeated the Hardys for the ROH World Tag Team Titles. Use that’. That’s how professional wrestling works in the bigger picture.”
In more recent news, Matt urged fans to ‘give these guys their flowers’ regarding the Young Bucks and ‘Hangman’ Adam Page. The suggestion led only to an undesirable back-and-forth with Brian Last and Jim Cornette.
