What do the Montreal Canadiens need to rebuild the team?

What do the Montreal Canadiens need

Entering the new season, many hockey fans and analysts alike pegged the Montreal Canadiens as a real cup contender. They were genuinely expected to be one of the top teams emerging from Canada this year. So far, it is glaring and obvious that we were completely wrong. They won only two after their first ten games, losing the remaining eight under normal regulation time. This season they have been outscored a whopping 34 to 19, and their power play is one of the worst in the NHL.

The Montreal Canadiens have put in a slight green patch on their horrific start to the season with a hard-fought win over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night. Their last outing on Thursday night was embarrassing. To put it in context, a 6-3 win over a fairly good Nashville Predators isn’t enough to remove the embarrassment that is the 2021-2022 campaign of the Montreal Canadiens. This particular game marks just their fifth season after playing about 20 games.

This team of misfits can only manage about an average of two goals per game and allow in up to 3.5 per game. About 26 goals are currently being used to outscore them, and only two teams, the Seattle Kraken and the Arizona Coyotes have worse point percentages in this stage of the season. It has been a lackluster beginning to the NHL season, and there is little or no chance that the Montreal Canadiens will finish within 15 points around a playoff spot.

Montreal Canadiens’ Season Update

This season, trying to fight back from these abysmal deficits would be akin to riding a bicycle in a Formula One race. The chances are slim, if not hopeless. In other words, the Montreal Canadiens do not have the firepower to catch up to the pack leaders like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, or the Boston Bruins.

According to this Canada site, the Stanley Cup final was another dark day in Hab’s history. The playoffs is widely celebrated and took place between May 15th, 2021 and July 7th, 2021, with the previous winners, the Tampa Bay Lightning winning their consecutive Stanley Cup in history. This makes it the third overall cup in their history, and they won it, with a four-game to one score against the Montreal Canadiens. It will be best if the Habs wash away the memories of the Stanley Cup final and see this season as an opportunity to regrow and rebuild. Practices are in place to ensure the team seizes this opportunity and make the most of it to improve the squad and every player.

It is practically hopeless to chase a playoff spot that they are guaranteed to miss out on at this point in the season. Instead, they must focus on working together and improving their players individually to better contribute to the whole team’s potential. Hockey is fundamentally a team sport, one in which everyone has to pull their weight. They should bet on their key players like Cole Caufield, Ryan Poehling, Nick Suzuki, Mathias Norlinder, Alexander Romanov, and Cayden Primeau. They also possess a favorable next generation such as Jordan Harris, Riley Kidney, Jayden Struble, Joshua Roy, and many more that can take the team to better heights in a few years.

Also, there is a chance that Shane Wright can be as good as Nathan MacKinnon and become a driving force for the team as soon as next season. But in the offense position, the Montreal Canadiens have not looked the part since Guy Lafleur. Although some good forwards have come through the ranks, they haven’t been any offensive superstar in the team.

Montreal Canadiens’ Player Ratings

The last time the Montreal Canadiens had a player finish amongst the highest ten scoring list was Mats Naslund in 1986 when he drove home about 110 points. The team’s last player amongst the top 20 list of top scorers was Alex Kovalev, who finished in 11th place in the 2008 competition. It has been more than two decades since a player from the Montreal Canadiens finished top 20 in league scoring. This does put things into perspective and exposes how much this team needs to improve.

As an offensive player, Shane Wright has proven to be the first consistent start in decades for the Montreal Canadiens. But after an awful season like the one they are having, there isn’t any assurance of landing the top pick, especially when you are almost sure you will not make the playoffs. So you could say the best thing for the team to do will be to get the best picks possible since the playoffs already look out of reach.

The Canadiens require a major rebuilding, and with the organization they have in place at this time, they could achieve that. From online casinos and major sports betting platforms, no one would want to bet on the Montreal Canadiens right now. But with some improvements and a major rebuild, things could look different in the foreseeable future.
