George Russell triumphs at Canadian GP amid McLaren mayhem

George Russell wins Canadian Grand Prix

MONTREAL, June 16, 2025 – Britain’s George Russell claimed Mercedes’ first win of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal yesterday, holding off Max Verstappen to take victory in a tense race that included a late collision between McLaren team mates and a late Safety Car.

Russell started on pole and maintained the lead from Verstappen throughout. A collision between McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris ended Norris’ race, triggering a Safety Car that helped seal Russell’s win over Verstappen.

One of Montreal’s fan favourites, young upstart, Kimi Antonelli finished third, making his F1 podium debut, completing a strong 1,3 showing for Mercedes. Piastri held fourth after pitting under the Safety Car, while Charles Leclerc secured fifth for Ferrari ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton in sixth.

Fernando Alonso finished seventh for Aston Martin, with Nico Hulkenberg eighth for Kick Sauber. Esteban Ocon took ninth in Haas’ 200th Grand Prix, and Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10 for Williams.
