Thirty-one years ago in 1991, the iconic film Thelma & Louise debuted, moving the needle for female-led films and making the cover of Time magazine. Decades later, Geena Davis is still committed to advocating for change and fostering equal representation for women, challenging Hollywood to have more female leads in big movies. Here’s what Geena Davis said about her role in the groundbreaking movie:
“What was so striking was the intense reaction to the film. Thelma and Louise end up driving off a cliff, and still viewers felt exhilarated by their story. It made me realize how few opportunities we give women to come out of a movie feeling inspired and empowered by the female characters. It changed everything about how I chose roles moving forward.”
Founded in 2004 by Geena Davis, the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is the only global research-based organization working collaboratively within the entertainment industry to create gender balance, foster inclusion and reduce negative stereotyping in family entertainment media.
“Geena Davis is a Hollywood Icon. Her acting career knows no limits and her strong passion for advocating for women and gender representation has made a tremendous and profound impact on the industry,” says Natasha Gargiulo. “As a working mom to a young girl, I was deeply inspired and driven after watching Davis’ documentary “This Changes Everything” to get involved with the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in the Media. I firmly believe in the institute’s motto: if she can see it she can be it.”
“At TD, supporting women and diverse people is a top priority, because we strongly believe that we can build a better world by being more inclusive. TD Bank Group is therefore proud to be the official principal sponsor of Oscar winner Geena Davis in Conversation with Natasha Gargiulo. This actor has done outstanding work promoting gender equity on the big and small screen over the years,” – Sylvie Demers, Chair, Quebec Market, TD Bank Group.
“I surround myself with the best, and 50% of my direct reports just happen to be women! They bring a different and important perspective to each and every challenge day after day, which has contributed tremendously to BFL Canada‘s success!” – Barry F. Lorenzetti, President, CEO & Founder, BFL Canada Inc.
A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Barry F. Lorenzetti Foundation in support of their commitment to advancing mental health care in Canada by improving access to care and combating stigma.
