Now that Daniel Craig has stepped down as James Bond, there’s a lot of uncertainty about the Eon Productions franchise and how it will move forward. A lot of debate is about the actor who will take over the iconic role, with the favourites changing on a regular basis.
When a new actor comes in as Bond, it’s important that the movie they feature in is a strong one. Pierce Brosnan and Craig starred in Goldeneye and Casino Royale respectively, both of which are regarded among the best Bond films ever made. Therefore, the next title in the franchise needs to be equally impressive.
Daniel Craig Burst onto the Scene in Casino Royale
When Craig took on the task of playing 007, he was lucky to have such an iconic picture to star in. Casino Royale was the first ever Bond book by Ian Fleming, so it allowed Craig to portray the character as the unfinished article in Martin Campbell’s film. This helped audiences get used to the new face on screen and see the series from a fresh perspective.
Casino Royale was doubtlessly helped by the inclusion of Texas Hold’em poker, which was blowing up at the time of the movie’s release in 2006. Fleming had featured baccarat in the original novel, but this may not have read as well at the time. If the picture was released now, though, perhaps it would be a different story. Thanks to the rise of online casinos, many people know about baccarat odds and payouts. The game has a simple betting system in which players stake on the banker’s or the player’s hand to win or tie. It is a popular inclusion at online casinos and many players would probably love to see it on screen in a Bond film.
Some of Fleming’s Books are Unused
Many of the Eon Production pictures have strayed away from Fleming’s novels, with scriptwriters often coming up with new ways to integrate elements of the source material with modern stories. However, it could be beneficial to use some of the original works that made Bond so popular in the first place when introducing a new actor as the iconic MI6 agent.
There are a few Fleming works that haven’t been used yet, meaning that it’s a good opportunity to turn to them. However, all the options that haven’t been adapted for the silver screen are short stories, meaning that screenwriters would still have to add a lot of depth to them. They include Risico, The Property of a Lady, The Hildebrand Rarity, and 007 in New York. Of all of these, The Property of a Lady could be the best way to introduce a new version of the spy. In the short story, Bond has to attend an auction to foil a member of the KGB.
There’s a lot of uncertainty about who will play Bond next, with the likes of Tom Hardy and Idris Elba having been mentioned frequently. The premise of the new movie could depend on who ends up taking the mantle from Craig.
