Montreal singer Jordyn Sugar releases her second single

Jordyn Sugar

Dollard des Ormeaux resident Jordyn Sugar is quickly making a name for herself as a singer on the Canadian music scene.

Last June, her first single “Leaves Me” dropped on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and Amazon Music. However, before that Jordyn Sugar caught the attention of Justin Bieber.  Also, AJ Mclean from the Backstreet Boys, who first met Jordyn this past February, did a shout out to her before the new single was released, while she was in South Africa filming the TV series “Fashion Hero”.

Jordyn officially dropped her new single, called “Summer High” April 6 of this year, on the four above-mentioned platforms.

Born in Toronto, the 18-year-old Montrealer’s musical skills extends to the drums (which has been playing since the age of 3), guitar and piano, and cites Shawn Mendes, Elton John, Phil Collins, the late Neil Peart from Rush and Michael Jackson as her major musical influences. When her school closed during the COVID lockdown, she decided to concentrate more on developing her music skills.

“I always had a passion for singing and playing the drums. And that passion grew even stronger during the COVID pandemic. So I decided to do a video of me singing on Tik Tok, and it really took off on social media,” said Jordyn during a Zoom interview that was conducted while she was on her way to do a video shoot.

That’s when Vito Luprano comes into the picture. A producer and veteran of the Canadian music scene for more than 40 years – 27 of them as executive producer, talent manager and music researcher for Celine Dion (in which during that time, he helped to develop the concept of the Las Vegas residency that started with Celine, and then caught on with other well-known musicians as Elton John, the Backstreet Boys and Adele) – was spending his time during the pandemic working with singer Kristina Maria, who has racked up four chart-topping songs in Canada.

“At that point, I was ready to calm down and write a memoir,” he said. “That’s when a friend of mine called me and told me about this girl singer named Jordyn Sugar. So he sent me her phone number and I gave her a call. I spoke to her mother Erica Freeman, and she was very pleasant to talk to, and told me that she loves everything that Jordyn does.”

“I then visited their home in Dollard, and asked Erica that first off, I wanted to talk to Jordyn alone. When we met in private, I asked her to sing a song in a cappella for me, and her tone pulled me in, because tone is what a real artist needs; it reminded me not only of Celine, but also Barbra Streisand and Brittany Spears. I then told Jordyn that I wanted to give her a shot and that I would help her, but we needed to do some hard work first,” he added.

Sealing the deal with an old-fashioned handshake, Mr. Luprano then introduced Jordyn to Nancy Martinez, one of the finest vocal coaches in the country. “Nancy and Jordyn really hit it off from the beginning; they worked together until she felt good about herself as a singer,” he said. “And the interesting thing was that during her time learning with Nancy, she never pushed me to record right away.”

Jordyn agrees. “Nancy made me a better singer, and six months later, I realized that I was ready to record a song,” she said. That song was “Leaves Me”, which was released in June of 2021 and became a success.

For her new single “Summer High”, Jordyn worked with renowned Dutch record producer and songwriter Clifford Goilo, and got her first official co-writing credit with this song. She was amazed at the quick turnover time it took for the song’s evolution from concept to recording it.

“It happened when Clifford and his girlfriend visited me at my home last November. Vito asked us to write a summer hit song together. At the start, we had no idea or vision for a summer song; however, within six hours, we had the song written, along with the lyrics, melodies and arrangements,” she said. The song was recorded two weeks later, with the mixing and finishing touches done between the two via Facetime (Clifford was in Sweden during that phase).

And Jordyn is now taking the next path in her music career. She is currently recording her first EP album, with seven out of the eight proposed songs already in the can. It’s slated for release this fall.

For many building owners, warehouse managers, or home workshop enthusiasts, the ceiling is a landscape of aging metal boxes housing flickering fluorescent tubes. These fixtures, while functional for decades, have become a source of mounting frustration. Between the humming ballasts and the constant need to replace burnt-out bulbs, the maintenance cycle feels never-ending. The good
