Following the 2004 season, the Montreal Expos announced their closure. They had the lowest attendance in Major League Baseball at the time of their departure. They also hadn’t made the playoffs in over 20 years. Nonetheless, many years later, Montreal Expos hoodies, hats, and t-shirts are considered very cool to wear, whether in Canada or the United States. Why?
There are numerous reasons why Expos items are considered cool and in high demand. First and foremost, there are the colours. Almost everyone likes the red, white, and blue colour scheme. The logo itself is also extremely unique. The E wrapped around what appears to be a M and a B is, well, strange. However, it works. Despite the fact that the name Expos doesn’t really represent anything significant or meaningful (aside from Expo 67 in Montreal being a big event 2 years before the team played a game), it’s still cool as hell.
Then there’s the cultural aspect to consider. The Expos played in a one-of-a-kind city with a distinct language. The team and its fan base were notable. Any American baseball fan who visited Montreal fell in love with the city’s nightlife, cultural sites, and the unusual stadium where they played.
Fast forward to today, and it appears that certain landmarks and significant events continue to put the team and its baseball jerseys in the spotlight. In 2010, Andre Dawson was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sadly, Expos catcher Gary Carter passed away in 2012. In 2014, Major League Baseball introduced preseason games in Montreal. Tim Raines, a former legend, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017. Soon after, it was the turn of the iconic Vladimir Guerrero to be enshrined.
So, whether you prefer the powder blue throwback colours and pinwheel cap from the Expos’ early days in the 1970s and 1980s, or the more classic dark royal design from the 1990s, Montreal baseball gear is cool. Hip hop artists have worn it in music videos, and even politicians have donned an Expos hat.
