A primer to the 2021 Montreal municipal elections

2021 Montreal municipal elections

On November 7, Montrealers from across the island will be going to the polls to elect a mayor, borough mayors and city councilors.

This year, there are 103 elected municipal positions that are up for grabs, with a total of 347 candidates who are vying for those positions for a mandate that will last for the next four years.

In order to break down the 2021 Montreal municipal elections in its simplest terms, here is a primer that you can follow.

Montreal mayor candidate Denis Coderre

Montreal Mayor candidates for 2021 election:

This year, there are a total of 10 candidates who are running to be the next mayor of Montreal: incumbent mayor Valerie Plante (Projet Montreal), former mayor Denis Coderre (Ensemble Montreal), Balarama Holness (Mouvement Montreal), Gilbert Thibodeau (Action Montreal), Luc Menard (Montreal 2021), plus independent mayoral candidates Beverly Bernardo, Jean Duval, Fang Hu, Wilder Jules and Dimitri Mourkes.

As well, there are six municipal parties that have candidates who are running for council seats only in their respective boroughs: Equipe Anjou, led by Luis Miranda; the Courage Party in the Cote des Neiges/NDG borough, led by Sue Montgomery; Team CDN-NDG; Equipe Lasalle; Parti Outremont; and Quartiers Montreal, which is led by Giuliana Fumagalli, who is the outgoing mayor of the Villeray-Saint Michel-Parc Extension borough.

When it comes to the number of candidates per municipal party, Projet Montreal has candidates running for every seat; Ensemble Montreal will have five fewer candidates as a result of an agreement reached between Denis Coderre and Luis Miranda, in which his party will not run candidates in the Anjou borough; Mouvement Montreal will have 74 candidates in the city’s 19 boroughs; and Action Montreal will have 22 candidates in the running.

When the election is over, there will be a total of 65 people who will be sitting on Montreal city council until 2025.
