Why business schools pay so much attention to the GMAT

GMAT

I believe there must be a lot of confusion for many people that why the standardized test is taken by students enrolling in MBA courses or applying for overseas business schools is not TOEFL or IELTS, but GMAT? Does it have any particularity?

That is correct. Just as the acorn contains the entire oak tree, many business elites include the IQ and knowledge factors in the GMAT test. It will be easier to figure out the true intention of the test makers if you can understand the reasoning behind the insight. Then, the result will just be half the work, twice the effect.

On the other hand, the GMAT exam itself has nothing to do with the level of the business world. It reflects the requirements or skills that students will face in their future jobs. Therefore, the GMAT exam is undoubtedly challenging for beginners. Besides the language barriers, students must overcome, having positive strong mental health and critical thinking skills are something that students need to possess.

Furthermore, quoting from the Chinese GMAT famous mentor GWD, “the boss in your workplace cannot give you enough opportunities, but GMAT can”. This means that students can gain valuable work-related experience, logical thinking, and mental toughness when things get tough. Surprisingly, these traits just happen to be what the corporate human resource is looking for, as well as the requirements for business schools.

Reasons GMAT test is made up of four sections

The GMAT exam consists of four sections that include an AWA (analytical writing assessment), IR (integrated reasoning), a quantitative (mathematics), and a verbal section. In this 4-hour exam, you will be tested in the following six areas:

1. The ability to apply mathematics

2. The ability to extract information from articles

3. The ability to make logical judgments in different scenarios

4. The ability to organize your language precisely

5. The ability to deduce a conclusion based on the analysis of given quantitative data and clues

6. The ability to write critiques for a given argument

For example, the AWA is based on a given standpoint, and writing a controversial but logical essay; IR aims to examine the ability to interpret information from different sources. As for the other two sections – Quantitative and Verbal, let’s see the details in the following.

GMAT Quantitative part

In most workplaces, a manager would encounter some occasions that require quantitative analysis, such as 30% of $800,000, and then you should make calculations quickly in your mind at that very moment. This is the fundamental skill for a qualified manager.

Managers generally would need to process a large amount of data in their work, so some basic statistical knowledge and visualization/analysis skills are highly demanded requirements. Moreover, the quantitative section will also strengthen other critical skills, such as detail-oriented management, precise distinction, pattern recognition, etc. In addition, data sufficiency is a unique type of question included in the GMAT exam that is not normally seen in other standardized exams.

GMAT Verbal part

The verbal section includes three parts: reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. The theme that runs through the language part of the GMAT is the importance of critical thinking. Critical thinking is all about the thinking and analysis of the information or facts, and being able to come up with a reasonable judgment, such as:

1. Is this information authentic?

2. Why is the information presented to me is perceived in this way? How do I verify it?

3. Does this information in line with what I know currently? Do I have a full understanding of it?

4. How can I evaluate this type of information?

If you want to succeed in the business, you must learn to distinguish between true and false information and utilizing critical thinking skills properly.

Overall, you may already understand why business schools pay so much attention to the GMAT test. But you may also have a voice in your head that is questioning yourself – why do I want to take the GMAT? To put it simply, what are the benefits of taking the GMAT exam?

The benefits of taking GMAT exam

Firstly, from the most realistic point of view, scoring high on the GMAT test will allow you to stand out among all other applicants. Since GMAT is scientifically designed by a third-party institution, it acts as a credible and objective yardstick for the admission committee to measure the academic ability of all applicants with different backgrounds. In a more realistic perspective, the average GMAT scores of the admitted students at every business school each year will also be used as a reference by the worldwide rankings.

Moreover, the GMAT test can be a steppingstone to find an internship at a business school. Many students who go to top postgraduate programs will feel that it is difficult to adapt to the fast-paced environment of business school without any previously acquired training of various skills when preparing for the GMAT exam. From another perspective, the GMAT test can also help students quickly become familiar with all things about the internship. Therefore, treating the tough process of GMAT preparation as a warm-up activity for the business school seems much more optimistic.

In addition, taking the GMAT exam will improve your soft skills. It’s easy to see that GMAT focuses on testing a person’s ability to make logical analyses. In daily living, many students from the business program tend to make emotional thinking rather than logical. Thus, it is often for them to make subjective mistakes when it comes to solving a problem. However, with GMAT training, this can all change. Through the process of preparing for the GMAT, you will feel the improvement of your logical and critical analysis ability. Secondly, the high-intensity study of the GMAT will force you to overcome the difficulty of making decisions, while strengthening time-management skills.

In the end, I hope you are now clearer about what your goal is. By now, you should have all the reasons to start mastering and take advantage of what GMAT can bring you. Perhaps preparing for the GMAT is a very tough and tiring process, but one day there will be a ray of light telling you that this is all worth it!
