Montreal Canadiens announce Martin St. Louis interim head coach

Montreal Canadiens general manager, Kent Hughes, announced on Wednesday night the appointment of Martin St. Louis as interim head coach. St. Louis is replacing Dominique Ducharme, who was relieved of his duties earlier today.

“We are very happy to welcome Martin to the Canadiens organization,” said Hughes. “Not only are we adding an excellent hockey man, but with Martin we are bringing in a proven winner and a man whose competitive qualities are recognized by all who have crossed his path.”

St. Louis, 46, carved out a storied 16-year career in the NHL, scoring 391 goals and adding 642 assists for a total of 1,033 points in 1,134 games with the Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, and the New York Rangers. The Laval, QC native also won the Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Lightning and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 12, 2018.

Martin St. Louis will address the media on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at 11:30 a.m., alongside executive vice-president of hockey operations, Jeff Gorton, and general manager, Kent Hughes.

16 – Despite never being drafted into the NHL, St. Louis enjoyed a remarkable 16-season career with the Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Rangers.

94 – St. Louis broke the 90-point plateau in his fourth year with the Lightning, amassing 38 goals and 56 assists in 82 games in 2003-04. The Laval native helped the Lightning to their first-ever Stanley Cup championship that spring.

7 – In addition to winning the Cup, St. Louis also took home the Art Ross and Hart trophies in 2003-04, making him just the seventh player in League history to win all three in the same season.

102 – St. Louis set a career high in 2006-07 when he registered 102 points in 82 games with Tampa. His 43 goals that season were also a personal best.

6 – St. Louis played in six NHL All-Star games, suiting up for the League’s marquee event in 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011.

6 – The 5-foot-8, 180-pound forward hit the 30-goal plateau six times in his career, and also recorded 80 or more points six times at the NHL level.

953 – St. Louis is the Lightning’s all-time franchise leader in points, with 953. His 588 assists for Tampa are also tops on the club, and he sits third in goals with 365.

1,033 – When he officially announced his retirement in July 2015, St. Louis wrapped up his NHL career with 1,033 career points (391G, 642A) in 1,134 games.

90 – In 107 career playoff games, St. Louis compiled 90 points including 42 goals.

2014 – St. Louis represented Canada twice at the Olympics, in 2006 and 2014, winning gold at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.

7 – In addition to his 2004 Cup win, St. Louis was a three-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy, he won the Art Ross Trophy twice, and the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award once apiece over the course of his career for a total of seven individual awards.

2018 – St. Louis was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
