The 23rd Montreal en Lumiere festival is set to start on February 17. And until March 5, Montrealers will get the chance to celebrate the province’s northern heritage with a variety of winter-related programming.
The focal point is going to be the Banque Scotia Skating Loop. Located at Place des Festivals, the skating loop is a 300-metre-long raised structure complete with many LED tubes that will give you a lit-up, colorful skating experience that will also offer skaters a unique look at Montreal’s urban landscape.

Between 9 and 11 every night, skaters will enjoy their rounds at the loop accompanied by a thematic musical program showcasing several musical genres, whether they be francophone, country, jazz, rock and so much more. Other musical programming at the loop includes Ici Musique Sundays (February 20 and 27), a five-minute sound and light show called “Coeur dansant”, which will be presented every evening at 7 and 8 p.m.; as an added attraction, the Montreal-based circus troupe Les 7 Doigts will present “Cadence” a magical tour de force through the history of skating from February 24 to March 5 on a first come, first served basis. Admission to the skating loop is free.
Other winter-related activities include an exhibition at Place des Arts that looks back at over a century of photos about how Montreal and Montrealers spent their winters; two luminous outdoor interactive works at Place des Festivals called “Laps” and “Fabuloscope”; and the Radio-Canada Olympic Zone, where you can try out the many sports that are being featured at the Beijing Winter Olympics, in a warm and festive setting.
