Promoting good dental habits in your household

good dental habits

Your behaviour as a parent has a huge effect on how your children develop oral hygiene habits. Take an example by eating healthful foods, brushing and flossing regularly and taking your children for regular dental check-ups.

Strive to make brushing and flossing fun for them by offering their preferred cartoon character or color toothbrush, encouraging them to earn stickers, etc.

Brushing

Teaching children good dental hygiene habits is essential if you want them to maintain good oral health. At least twice per day they must brush to prevent tooth decay and gum disease as brushing helps remove food particles that could contribute to cavities. Make sure they learn to spit out any extra toothpaste rather than swallow it, while drinking fluoridated water will also benefit their oral wellbeing.

Oral hygiene plays a significant role in overall health by lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes. Furthermore, practicing good dental hygiene can save money because improper dental care may lead to costly procedures like root canals and crowns that need expensive procedures in order to fix.

Encourage your children to brush by reading books and watching videos about dental hygiene. Make it enjoyable by getting them a toothbrush featuring their favorite characters or colors; set a timer so they can brush for two minutes! Make sure they also floss every day using interdental brushes or dental floss – then dispose of any leftover material afterward!

Flossing

Flossing cleans between teeth where brush bristles cannot reach. It also interrupts the formation of dental plaque (a biofilm composed of bacteria) before it hardens into calculus – which is the main source of gum disease, leading to tooth loss and other serious health conditions.

One of the primary advantages of flossing is that it can help prevent bad breath (halitosis). Bacteria becomes trapped between your teeth, creating unpleasant smells associated with bad breath.

To do this properly, insert 18 inches of floss between each tooth, using clean sections for each intersection. Be sure to curve the floss around each base tooth rather than scraping gums when passing between your fingers. It is ideal to floss before brushing, as the floss can loosen food bits and plaque before the toothbrush can remove them; and teaching children how to properly floss is also vital in order to avoid irritating or injuring their gums.

Water

Water is one of the best beverages you can consume to improve your oral health. Free from sugars, water has the power to wash away food residue or bacteria that could potentially lead to cavities while at the same time diluting acids created by leftover bacteria that attack enamel surfaces of teeth.

Consuming water can also increase saliva production. Saliva plays an essential role in neutralizing acids that damage tooth enamel and combating bacteria that leads to plaque build-up, helping protect it and keeping your smile looking its best.

Reducing sugary drink consumption during the day and opting for healthier beverages like milk, water, or unsweetened tea can improve overall dental health. When drinking anything sweetened with added sugar such as soda pop or juices with sugar added such as fruit juices is advised if sugary drinks must be consumed; use a straw if consuming these items so less contact between liquid and your teeth occurs. Many public water supplies in the United States contain fluoridated water which provides added protection from tooth decay – this simple step can go a long way towards improving family dental health – should any questions arise regarding oral health concerns of concerns feel free to contact Smile by Design for advice!
