CJAD, the longtime leading Montreal English language news talk radio station, has eliminated its newsroom operation, one of the cornerstones of the station. CJAD lay offs has come to a major surprise to all Montrealers.
Who was laid off at CJAD?
In a move made on Monday afternoon by the station, which is owned by Bell Media, veteran CJAD reporters Richard Deschamps, Shuye Lee and Elizabeth Zogalis were laid off from their jobs. Only Trudy Mason and Jason Mayoff retained on air positions.
As well, two shows from CJAD’s weeknight schedule— Passion with Laurie Betito and Nightside with John Pole — were immediately cancelled. According to a report in The Gazette, the void left by these cancellations will be filled by reruns of CJAD mid-morning show The Elias Makos Show and the nationally syndicated Evan Solomon Show.
As for the void left in CJAD’s newsroom, that will be filled by some of CTV Montreal’s news anchors, who will have the job of anchoring newscasts for CJAD between 7 and 10 p.m
It was also reported that a Bell Media spokesperson stated that CJAD, which celebrated its 75th anniversary this past December, conducted “a limited number of staff reductions, many of them changes in on-air broadcast roles due to programming decisions” at CJAD.
